Capital Credits: Notice of 1987 Unclaimed Capital Credits This is a notice of unclaimed capital credits for members of record of Chugach Electric Association, Inc., in 1987. The complete list of names will also run as an insert in the Anchorage Daily News each Sunday in June, beginning June 3, 2007. Capital credits from these retirements that have not been claimed by Dec. 27, 2007, will be retained by Chugach Electric Association. However, members of record may continue to claim their unpaid capital credits beyond this date. Questions may be directed to Chugach's Capital Credits section at (907) 762-4643 or to Customer Service at (907) 563-7366. If you have already contacted Chugach regarding your capital credits, there is no need to contact us again. Your expected response time is 8-12 weeks. Capital credits are a member's share of the cooperative's margins for a year in which revenues and other operating income exceed fixed and variable expenses. The amount of an individual member's credits is proportional to the amount paid for electric service in a given year. Periodically capital credits are returned to the membership when authorized by the Chugach Board of Directors. Chugach mailed checks to members of record from 1987 after the board authorized retirements. Postcard notices were mailed to members who had not cashed a check from an earlier retirement. Many of the checks were either not cashed or were returned as undeliverable. In all, about 15,000 members of record are still eligible for their share of about $933,000 in unclaimed capital credits. When leaving the system, members may take a discounted payment for capital credits, or leave a forwarding address for future retirement notices. By sending the notices or checks and running the names, Chugach is able to avoid having the unclaimed capital credits escheat to the State and keeps them with the cooperative so members of record may claim them. Even if their checks were returned as undeliverable, former members or their estates may still claim their capital credits. If your name appears on the list, or if you have information that may help Chugach locate someone listed, please fill out and submit the research form.
