Prepare for that power outage
November 2004
Here are some tips to help you be prepared to weather an outage.
Put items you'll need in case of a power outage in a convenient location and make sure all household members know where to find them.
If your home is supplied by a well, keep some containers filled with water on hand. Include water to flush the toilet.
If your home is in a remote location, is subject to frequent high winds, or if you have a family member who is on a life-support system, you may want to consider a portable generator.
If your lights go out, check to see if your neighbors' lights are out to determine if the power is off in your neighborhood or only in your home. Call Chugach at 563-7494 to report the outage. If the outage appears to be widespread, turn on a portable radio for information.
If it is just your home, check your fuse box or circuit breakers. If your fuses are not blown, call us.
Chugach uses a voice mail system to provide outage information and coordination after hours. After listening to a short outage message, your call will be transferred to a dispatcher if you desire. If the outage is widespread, additional employees may be called in to take outage information from consumers. Stay away from downed lines or electrical equipment that appears to be damaged.
Leave one light turned on to indicate when your power is restored.
Unplug sensitive equipment like computers and VCRs. You may wish to purchase voltage surge protectors for added protection for sensitive electronic equipment. Remember, surge protectors only work if they're in use before a surge.
Do not open your freezer or refrigerator door unless necessary. A full freezer can maintain a freezing temperature for up to two days if you don't open it. Cover your freezer with sleeping bags or blankets to provide further insulation.
Never attempt to heat a room with a portable grill or charcoal.
When your power comes back on, turn on breakers one at a time. Avoid using sensitive electronic equipment during this time.
