Chugach Electric board approves South Anchorage projects
The Chugach board recently approved two projects that are expected to assure an
adequate power supply for growth and to increase reliability in South Anchorage.
At its December meeting the board approved a project to build a new bulk substation
in South Anchorage. The cost is anticipated to be between $11 and $14 million. The second
project the board approved is construction of a new transmission line linking the International
Station to the new South Anchorage Substation. Chugach estimates the cost to be $4 to $5
million. Of the total costs for these two projects, Chugach expects to spend nearly $15 million -
or about 75 percent of the dollars - within the local economy.
Chugach is designing the new substation and transmission line so that it will ultimately link
Chugach's University Substation near Tudor Road and Bragaw Street and the International Station
near Chugach's headquarters building off International Airport Road. Chugach expects to start
construction in 2004 and complete the projects in 2005.
