Chugach members lose power
The Southcentral Power Project tripped offline Jan, 26 at 10:29 p.m. causing an outage to approximately 6500 members. The trip was initiated by the operation of a transformer protective device for one of SPP’s generating units.
The loss of 180 megawatts of generation caused load shedding by various utilities to ensure the interconnected system remained stable and largely energized. Other generating units were started to restore power.
Chugach customers were restored to service by 11:05 p.m. The cause of the power plant outage is under investigation. SPP is a joint project between Chugach and ML&P.
Chugach is the largest electric utility in Alaska, providing power for Alaskans throughout the Railbelt through retail, wholesale and economy energy sales.
