Chugach to rebuild section of transmission line

Section between Anchorage/Kenai to get upgrade

Work is underway on a four-mile section of transmission line linking Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. Chugach Electric Association is rebuilding the 115-kilovolt transmission line that was constructed in 1962, and is nearing the end of its useful life. Originally designed to carry power from the Cooper Lake Hydro Electric Project to Anchorage, today the line carries power produced at the Cooper Lake, Bradley Lake and Nikiski power plants.

The project will rebuild approximately four miles of transmission line between mile post 61 and 55 along the Seward Highway, using 230-kilovolt standards to maintain reliability and accommodate anticipated load growth in the future. The project is formally known as the Quartz Creek Transmission Line Rebuild: Silvertip Creek to Hope Substation Project.

Line construction began in January and is scheduled to be concluded by May 2017. Clearing for the construction began in December 2016.  The scope of work for the project includes:

  • Remedial clearing of the existing Right-of-Way
  • Restoration of lost or overgrown accesses
  • Removal of existing structures and conductors
  • Installation of new structures and conductors

At times throughout the construction, motorists along the Seward Highway will see increased truck traffic hauling major equipment. At this time, no traffic delays are anticipated. However, if plans change, Chugach will work to inform the public of any delays that could be the result of project work.
